Hardcore mode in Dino Hunters is the single most punishing way to play the game. One death deletes your hunter permanently, and you start over from the Outfitter's porch with nothing. Despite the difficulty, hardcore mode has become the preferred way for experienced players to experience Dino Hunters because every decision carries weight and every successful contract feels like a genuine achievement. This guide explains the hardcore rules, the most common causes of permadeath, and the strategies experienced hardcore hunters use to clear contracts without dying.
If you are new to Dino Hunters, do not start in hardcore mode. Play through at least 20 hours of normal mode first, learn the biomes, the dinosaur behavior patterns, and the ballistic model, and only then consider hardcore. Our Dino Hunters beginner guide is the best place to start if you have not yet played the game.
Hardcore Mode Rules
Hardcore mode in Dino Hunters changes six core mechanics, each of which compounds the difficulty.
Rule 1: One life. Your hunter has exactly one life. Death in any biome — whether from a dinosaur attack, drowning, fall damage, or any other cause — permanently deletes your hunter and all of their gear. You start a brand new hunter with default loadout.
Rule 2: No Self-Revive Tokens. Self-Revive Tokens do not exist in hardcore mode. Once you go down, you stay down unless a co-op partner revives you (and even then, hardcore mode disables co-op revive in some configurations).
Rule 3: No map fast-travel. Fast-travel between the Outfitter and the biomes is disabled in hardcore mode. You must physically travel to and from each biome, which adds significant time pressure to every expedition.
Rule 4: Increased dinosaur aggression. Dinosaurs in hardcore mode detect you from farther away, charge more frequently, and call reinforcements more often. The Velociraptor that would flee in normal mode instead tries to swarm you in hardcore mode.
Rule 5: Reduced sample timer. The Trophy Sample timer is reduced from 90 in-game seconds to 60 in-game seconds in hardcore mode. This makes extracting a clean sample significantly harder.
Rule 6: No second chances. Most contracts in hardcore mode cannot be retried. If you fail a contract by losing the sample timer, killing the wrong dinosaur, or dying, the contract is gone forever.
Hardcore vs Normal Mode Comparison
| Mechanic | Normal Mode | Hardcore Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Lives | Unlimited | One |
| Self-Revive Tokens | Available | Disabled |
| Fast-travel | Available | Disabled |
| Sample timer | 90 seconds | 60 seconds |
| Dinosaur aggression | Standard | Increased |
| Contract retry | Always | Mostly disabled |
Common Causes of Permadeath
Most hardcore deaths fall into one of five categories. Knowing the categories helps you avoid them.
Cause 1: Wrong caliber on apex predator. Bringing an underpowered rifle to a T-Rex or Spinosaurus contract is the leading cause of hardcore deaths. The dinosaur does not die from your shots and counter-attacks. Always bring the recommended caliber.
Cause 2: Approaching a pack of Velociraptors. Velociraptors in hardcore mode travel in packs of 4-6 instead of the 2-3 you find in normal mode. Approaching without clearing the pack first is suicide. Use a shotgun or high-rate-of-fire rifle to thin the pack before focusing on the target.
Cause 3: Underestimating Triceratops charges. Triceratops charges deal massive damage in hardcore mode and can one-shot a hunter with full health. Never stand in front of a Triceratops at close range. Always approach from the side or behind.
Cause 4: Falling off cliffs in the Mountain biome. Mountain biome cliff faces are steep, and a single misstep can send you plummeting to your death. Always scout the edge before walking along it, and never run on cliff edges.
Cause 5: Drowning in the Coastal biome. Spinosaurus sometimes drags wounded dinosaurs into the water. If you try to retrieve the Trophy Sample and the Spinosaurus drags the carcass into deep water, you can drown. Always extract the sample on dry land, even if it means dragging the carcass away from the water first.
Permadeath Cause Frequency
| Cause | Frequency | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong caliber on apex predator | Very common | Always check contract details |
| Velociraptor pack ambush | Common | Clear the pack first |
| Triceratops charge | Common | Approach from behind |
| Mountain cliff fall | Less common | Scout cliff edges |
| Coastal drowning | Less common | Extract sample on dry land |
Strategies for Hardcore Success
The strategies below are what experienced hardcore hunters consistently use to extend their runs. None of them are complicated, but each one addresses a specific cause of death.
Strategy 1: Stack Tier 1 contracts. The first 10-15 hardcore contracts should all be Tier 1 Velociraptor or small herbivore contracts in the Desert biome. Tier 1 dinosaurs are forgiving, the Desert biome has excellent visibility, and stacking contracts means you minimize travel time.
Strategy 2: Never accept a contract you cannot afford to fail. Each hardcore contract carries risk. If you cannot afford to lose the time spent on the expedition, do not accept the contract. Wait until you have a stockpile of money and a comfortable rifle.
Strategy 3: Always bring two primary rifles. Carry your main rifle plus a backup rifle in your pack. If your main rifle jams or runs out of ammo at a critical moment, the backup saves your run. The backup can be a smaller caliber — anything is better than empty hands.
Strategy 4: Use bait aggressively. Bait is cheap and effective. Lure Velociraptor packs away from your target by placing bait in a circle around your stalk path. By the time you reach your target dinosaur, the pack will be busy with the bait and you can take the shot uncontested.
Strategy 5: Extract Trophy Samples early. Do not wait for the sample timer to count down. Extract the sample as soon as the dinosaur drops, even if it means skipping some of the bonus objectives. A delivered sample is worth more than a missed sample with bonuses.
Strategy Effectiveness
| Strategy | Effectiveness | Difficulty to Implement |
|---|---|---|
| Stack Tier 1 contracts | High | Low |
| Only accept affordable contracts | High | Low |
| Bring two primary rifles | High | Low |
| Use bait aggressively | High | Medium |
| Extract samples early | Medium | Low |
Hardcore Mode Milestones
The hardcore community tracks several milestones that mark progress through the difficulty curve. Hitting these milestones is a sign that your hardcore strategy is working.
Milestone 1: First 10 contracts. Reaching your first 10 hardcore contracts without dying means you have learned the basics. Most hardcore hunters die before reaching this milestone.
Milestone 2: First Tier 3 contract. Clearing a Tier 3 contract in hardcore mode means you can handle mid-game dinosaurs. Most hunters reach this milestone around contract 15-20.
Milestone 3: First Tier 4 contract. Tier 4 contracts are where hardcore truly begins. Reaching this milestone means you have a stockpile of money and a fully upgraded rifle.
Milestone 4: First apex predator. Killing a T-Rex or Spinosaurus in hardcore mode is a major achievement. Most hardcore hunters who reach this milestone have already cleared 30-40 contracts.
Milestone 5: First 100 contracts. Reaching 100 hardcore contracts without dying places you in the top tier of hardcore players. The strategies above are what got you here.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I switch from hardcore mode back to normal mode?
Yes, but doing so deletes your hardcore hunter and resets your hardcore progress. Most hardcore players consider this a soft form of quitting, so the community generally discourages switching modes mid-run.
Does co-op help in hardcore mode?
Co-op is enabled in hardcore mode by default, but co-op revive is disabled. If you die, even a teammate standing next to you cannot save you. Co-op helps by allowing teammates to spot dinosaurs and to share the work, but it does not save you from your own mistakes.
What happens to my money if my hardcore hunter dies?
All money, gear, and progression on that hunter is lost. The next hunter starts from zero. Hardcore runs are about the journey, not the accumulation of wealth.
Should I play hardcore solo or with friends?
Both are valid. Solo hardcore is the purest test of skill. Co-op hardcore is more forgiving on mistakes but still brutal because revive is disabled. New hardcore players should start solo and graduate to co-op once they have a feel for the difficulty.
